SEPTEMBER 2010 - FEATURED DEPARTMENT

TASLEY VOLUNTEER FIRE COMPANY
STATION 8

Tasley Volunteer Fire Company, Inc.

The Tasley Volunteer Fire Company was organized in 1926. It is said to have been the first self organized volunteer fire company in Accomack County.  Located near the center of the county, the community of Tasley borders neighboring Accomac, which serves as the county seat. It should be noted that located within their district is the oldest municipal building in the county, the historic Debtors' Prison, constructed in 1783 - which is located across the street from the courthouse, in downtown Accomac (yes, it's spelled without the "K").

The first official firehouse in Tasley was built in 1927, near the center of town.  Still modestly standing today, the two-story concrete block building originally measured 24' x 36' and housed Tasley's first motorized apparatus, a “Deluge – Master Fire Fighter" triple combination pumper, manufactured by the Prospect Fire Engine Company of Prospect, Ohio that was delivered on October 12, 1927.  Being one of the only pieces of motorized fire apparatus on the entire Eastern Shore during that time, the "Deluge" responded to numerous fire incidents up and down the Eastern Shore of Virginia, from New Church to Cheriton.  Due to the need for additional space, an addition was made to the rear of the building during 1930.

The present station was constructed in two separate phases, adjacent to the original firehouse. Originally built in 1973, the north (left) portion of the station includes two (2) small engine bays, which presently house the Brush truck and Squad vehicle. The newer and larger (right) portion, built in 1991, houses the departments fire suppression units, and also includes a kitchen, restrooms, and storage rooms. A large storage area and male & female bunk rooms are located on a mezzanine level, above the kitchen. During recent years, the upstairs of the old firehouse, was renovated to accomodate a meeting/training room and an administrative office.

Currently, the Tasley V.F.C. operates a total of five (5) pieces of modern emergency apparatus, including one Engine, one Rescue-Engine, one Tanker, one Brush unit, and a BLS non-transport vehicle. In addition to serving Tasley and Accomac, members also provide protection to Drummondtown, Greenbush, Daugherty, and various outlying rural areas.

During 2001, the membership of the Tasley Volunteer Fire Company, Inc. commemorated their 75th Anniversary; the highlight of events being a large parade that was attended by numerous departments, from throughout the Del-Mar-Va Peninsula.

The dedicated volunteers of Station 8 responded to 145 fire incidents and over 200 EMS medical assist calls during 2009.  Tasley's immediate neighboring mutual-aid departments are Station 18 -Onley and Station 9  - Onancock to the south; and Station 7 - Parksley to the north.

In closing, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Tasley member Don Amadeo, and Chief Jeff Beall, for their invaluable information and archived photographs that were used to compile this profile.
