MVC with Hazardous Materials Incident, Lankford Highway ~ Machipongo
On Tuesday, September 6, 2011, Stations 17 (Eastville), 16 (Northampton), 19 (Cape Charles Rescue), and 31 (NCEMS) were dispatched for a reported motor vehicle accident, involving a possible hazardous materials incident on Lankford Highway, near Machipongo. Crews arrived on location to find a tractor-trailer overturned, completely blocking the southbound lane of Lankford Highway. Command was established by Chief 17 (D. Eder). Stations 14 (Cheriton) and 15 (Cape Charles) were also alerted to respond, as well as the Eastern Shore Regional Hazardous Materials team and the Regional Hazardous Materials Officer (Todd Cannon). Personnel worked to quickly contain an active leak of both mineral oil and diesel fuel from the vehicle. Other agencies on scene also included: V.D.O.T., Virginia State Police, and the Northampton County Sheriff's Office. The last units cleared the scene at 1259 hours.
