"Of Ourselves We Give"
The Eastville Volunteer Fire Company was organized in 1931. Located near the center of Northampton County, the town of Eastville is known nationwide for being home to the oldest continuous county court records in the United States.
The first firehouse was located across the street from the historic Northampton County Courthouse, on Main Street in Eastville. The present two-story brick station was constructed through the Work Progress Administration (WPA) during 1940. The original station includes two (2) engine bays, restroom and offices on the first floor; with a meeting/community room and kitchen, located on the second floor. A two-bay addition was added in 1976 and during 2007 another addition was made to the rear of the building, to house one of the departments tankers and other portable equipment, such as hose and a SCBA fill-station.
Just down the street from the Fire Station, is the company's bingo hall, which previously was a furniture store. The membership purchased the building several years ago to hold bingo and other community events. Bingo is held throughout the year, on each Saturday evening and provides a much needed income for the company, since the funds received from Northampton County is very limited.
Eastville V.F.C. - Station 17 operates an impressive fleet of modern apparatus, including 2 Engines, 2 Tankers, 1 Brush unit and a utility vehicle. The all-volunteer force typically responds to an average of 180 calls each year. The company runs strictly fire and medical assist calls only. (Ambulance coverage is provided by Station 19 - Cape Charles Rescue, and Northampton EMS). Due to the regional, standard dispatch procedure of alerting four (4) stations on the initial alarm for any reported structure fire, Station 17 responds to all structure fires occuring in Northampton County; from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge -Tunnel to the Northampton-Accomack county line, just north of Exmore. During a fire incident, the average turn-out of firefighters during the day is 8 to 12, with 13 to 16 responding during the night. Eastville's neighboring mutual-aid departments are Station 16 - Northampton (Nassawadox) to the north; and Station 14 - Cheriton, Station 15 - Cape Charles & Station 19 - Cape Charles Rescue (EMS) to the south.
The membership of the Eastville Volunteer Fire Company continues to live up to their motto, "Of Ourselves We Give".
