The Cape Charles Rescue Service was organized in 1944. It is one of seven (7) fire and rescue stations that serve and protect the residents of Northampton County. The current facility is located in Bayview, situated between the towns of Cape Charles and Cheriton.
Prior to this organization, ambulance service was provided to lower Northampton County by the Cape Charles Volunteer Fire Company. For years, Cape Charles Rescue occupied a two-bay station located just down the street from the Cape Charles fire station on Mason Avenue, in Cape Charles. In July 1998, construction began on the present modern facility and members occupied the new building in 1999. It was dedicated during 2000.
The decorative concrete block station includes two (2) drive-thru apparatus bays capable of housing up to four (4) pieces of apparatus. Other amenities include a combination community/training room, kitchen, day room, bunk rooms, restrooms with shower facilities, decontamination room, conference room and several other offices & storage areas.
Cape Charles Rescue - Station 19 operates a fleet of modern apparatus, including two (2) Advanced Life Support Ambulances and one (1) utility vehicle. Typically members respond to over 1300 incidents annually. Their primary coverage area encompasses all of lower Northampton County beginning at Machipongo in the northern portion of the district, south to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. {Virginia Beach Fire & EMS responds to emergency incidents occurring on the bridge-tunnel}.
Cape Charles Rescues' neighboring mutual-aid EMS department is Station 16 - Northampton (Nassawadox) to the north. In addition, Station 31 - Northampton County EMS is simultaneously alerted on all incidents occuring Northampton County.
